The List
Disclaimer: This page is a work in progress!!! And its endless too.
Sometimes I leave the lights on when I don’t need them.- I use non-fluorescent lights Edit: I have
oneseveral CFL. - Worse than that, last time a CFL bulb burnt out I replaced it with another CFL… and then i threw it away in the trash bacause I didn’t know any better… I still can’t get over the guilt…
I watch TV.Now I’m only watching Desperate Housewives and Lost on DVD/computer.I leave the TV on while Im blogging.- I leave the computer on when Im whatching TV.
I turn off the TV with the remote control…I leave the laptop on when I’m not home.I leave the phone charger in the socket.I don’t unplug the laptops and ipod power adaptors.I have a monster freezer sucking up power to freeze last century veggies, ice bags and half-pack of ice-cr… nope, nevermind, not even ice-cream now.I use too much central heating.- I fly. Frequently.
Sometimes my supermarket decisions are governed by “whatever is cheaper”.I eat meatevery day once-twice a week.Sometimes organic meat, but not always. Most of my veggies are not organic.I buy bananas and mangos and pinnapples from Costa Rica and from who-knows where else.Sometimes I buy overpackaged goods. Sometimes I overpackage them myselfI throw away food because I let it go bad.- I don’t turn off the shower while I’m soaping.
- I use toilet paper.
Not recycled. I use disposable tampons and pads.I usenapkins and paper towels, not recycled.- I use paper tissues.
All somenone of my cleaning products are environmentally-nasty.I don’t know what’s in them and I never cared.Edit: I know there is nasty stuff in them.My toiletries and cosmetics are Eco-nasty and most of them must be tested on animals (except the Body Shop ones).Edit: I have all natural, organic, shower gel, tooth paste, sunscreen body lotion and lip balm.I take the pill, contributing to all those hormones in the sewer that cause sexual disfunctions in fish.I use clumping kitty litter.I get plastic bags I don’t need and use them to throw away daily kitty clumps.- I use non-biodegradable trash-bags,
litter scoopings bags, sandwich bags, ice bags. - I
have refused to recycle organic waste. (There is even a special bin for that just outside my bulding…) - I’ve made fun of my friend Ana for being a naive environmentalist.
- I wear leather. In fact, I can’t wear shoes in anything but leather. When are “organic leather” shoes going to be widely available?
- My clothes are all either regular cotton or synthetic from-oil fibers…
- My internet addiction is getting outta hand…
What should I do???

Thanks for the post on recycling. I’m an addict and learned a lot.

Hi Alina,
I’ve been reading your blog for a while and you’ve taught me lots. I’m sorry to hear your thesis is taking over your life. I have the opposite problem – I ignore my thesis too much!
I liked the idea of your list and want to steal the idea for my blog, with a link to your blog. My list is way longer than yours, but I first decided to do it a month ago and now I’m getting around to uploading it, I’ve already crossed some things off
Cheers, Clare.

Hi Clare, steal away. Hehe, actually, ignoring my thesis for too long was what got me into this mess in the first place.

Lists are a great way to procrastinate from dealing with the seemingly neverending pleasure that is derived from working on a thesis. But, writing is writing, that is what I tell myself anyway.

Great idea to have a list. I do this often – I am getting my master’s in sustainable management so all too aware of environmental issues. And I also watch Desperate Housewives – one of my guilty pleasures

Hey! Number 29 can be un-crossed-off: we use a natural corn-cob-based clumping kitty-kat litter available through the local Canadian mega-grocer Loblaws (cower, cower… the store is not exactly a good example of sustainability). However, the litter works relatively well, creates almost no dust and uses what is normally considered to be a useless by-product of the farming industry (no one eats cobs). But PLEASE enlighten me if I’m wrong!
Thanks for the site. Very cool.

Well, the reason #29 is crossed off is actually because I don’t have a cat at the moment.
